Do You Know Doctor Motlana?
If you are like empowermentsa founder (mphuthi MPHUTHI), you are a big fan of business success stories of Black and White entrepreneurs, you would have heard of Dr Motlana and his many successes as an activist, entrepreneur, unsuccessful business ventures, chance-taker, etc. This is the man who is widely regarded as “the father of Black Economic Empowerment”.
Well, I recently visited The Doc at his house when I heard that he was not well and, unsurprisingly, bedridden as he was, the fighting spirit still filled the bedroom. Perhaps it may have been as a result of the visit by Archbishop Tutu just before me.
Anyway, we discussed a number of issues including the fact that there are no monuments of South African entrepreneurs, especially Black leaders. South Africa only acknowledges politicians and not job-creating business people. Do you know that South African business leaders like Eric Molobi and Humphrey Khoza recently died? We did absolutely nothing for them, when they were still alive or now that they are dead? It is an absolute shame!!
How will history judge our pivotal business era? So far, this era is known for its political achievements. So, what about business?? If we do not honour and acknowledge our own national gems, why should our youngsters not worship the self-destructive and abrasive business approach of the likes of Donald Trump, instead of diplomatic, low-key and more successful styles of the likes of JB Magwaza?
It is for this reason that empowermentsa invites you to profile your understanding of Doctor Motlana:
1. Did you personally do a deal with Dr Motlana? What were your experiences?
2. What deal stands out as the best or the worst deal by Dr Motlana? Why?
3. What business failure or blunder could have been avoided (remember his ousting from Nail)?
4. What business strategy/innovation did you learn from him (remember their N shares)?
5. Were you ever disappointed in any business dealings with and of The Doc?
Please try to keep your focus and insights strictly on Dr Motlana within a particular organisation/deal. We need to avoid talking about the organization itself as that will distract us.
All your postings will be compiled into one, published and then given to Dr Motlana at a special event specially to honour him. People that have interesting submissions will be invited to present them during the momentous occasion.
We need to build some form of monument in his honour. No, we are not going to give him some tiny statue to be put in some back-office at his house. NO!! This is a national hero whose achievements need to be seen by the whole world.
This is just the beginning as we will do the same for the likes of Eric Molobi (KTI), Fred Phaswana, etc.
Unfortunately, because we do not know the amount of submissions you will make, we can not build a special page for the Doc. So, please go to the investment opportunities link and leave your comments there. Ensure that you leave all your contact details so that we invite you for interviews later.
